During the years of the Qing Emperor Daoguang, the First Opium War broke out between China and Britain. Yao Ying, who was then the military attaché of Taiwan, proposed building 17 artillery forts in the Anping and Taijiang areas to prevent the British from entering Taiwan. Sicao Artillery Battery was one of them.
Sicao Artillery Battery has been declared a National Grade II monument. However, no ancient cannons remain, only the fortress’ wall. The wall has 13 round holes, and now forms part of the walls of Tainan City’s Zhenhai Elementary School.
The Sicao Artillery Battery is located in front of the Sicao Dazhong Temple. The Artillery Battery is also near the famous Sicao Green Tunnel, where you can take a sightseeing raft through the river and enjoy the beautiful natural ecology.
