The Salt Area covers Chiali, Beimen, SheuChia, Cigu, Jiangjyun and Hsikang townships in Tainan County. As they are located in the coastal area, soils there are highly salty and thus not suitable for growing crops. As the life there is tough, locals have developed an uncompromised and optimistic personality and have a different interpretation of the salt area.
The term Salt Area has a significant place in Taiwanese literature and can be dated back to the Chiali Cinqfeng Society formed by Hsin-rong Wu and Sui-tan Guo in 1932 where a special style of literature grew. The salty, dry and bitter tastes revealed in the works from the Salt Area reflect a strong sense of nativism, and it is why works from this area are known as the Salt Area Literature.

For example, the Children of Salt Pans by Su-fan Tsai, one of the representative writers of the Salt Area Literature, depicts not only the story of a southwest coastal town, but also the interpretation of the social changes in postwar Taiwan. It is not just about love between men and women, but also about the affection between family, and the lifestyle of commons living in the salt area.
